Art - Drawing & painting

To develop the potential which everyone has to draw well from observation. To teach methods of drawing which are useful for oil painting and others which relate to water colour painting. To learn oil, acrylic, gouache and water colour techniques and make finished paintings in these media.

Art - Drawing the body

Several different media will be used during the course of the session to create a variety of pictures based on different poses and postures. The importance of observation and developing a sense of proportion will be prioritized throughout the session.

Art - Early British watercolour techniques

Learners will look at the work of great late 18th and early 19th century watercolourists including Turner, Thomas Girtin and John Sell Cotman. Learners will learn skills to develop satisfying compositions and creating convincing landscapes in the early 19th century style.

Art - Focus on composition

This course focuses on the principles and techniques of composition, essential for creating visually compelling and balanced artwork. Each week covers a different aspect of composition, offering both theoretical insights and practical exercises to enhance your artistic skills.

Art - Impressionism and its techniques

This workshop can be completed in oils or acrylics and will explore the use of bright, broken strokes of colour to create the effects of sunshine and weather which impressionists so skilfully conveyed.

Art - Introduction to colour

This course is designed to introduce learners to the fundamental concepts and practical applications of colour in their artwork. Each week focuses on a different aspect of colour theory and its use in artistic practice, providing both theoretical knowledge and hands-on experience.

Art - Life drawing

Starting each session with a series of short poses, followed by longer poses, thereby allowing intense study.

Art - Mastering portraits

This workshop will cover the basics of portraiture, the importance of drawing, and bringing these skills to bear in effective portrait work.

Art - Oil painting

This course is for those who wish to learn about oil painting. The subjects covered include: materials, preparing the paper, masses, values, light & shadow, atmospheric perspective, colour theory and composition. During the first term the subject matter will be still life, the second term will cover portraits and the final term landscapes. It is advisable to attend all three terms to have the full benefit of this course, but not essential if you have prior experience.

Art - Oil painting - Rembrandt and Velasquez

This workshop explores the dramatic contrast of light and dark and dynamic figure compositions based on the great painters' work. Learners will choose from several examples of the artists' work and will be guided through some basic principles around the techniques used.

Art - Using collage in artwork

This course explores the diverse and creative world of collage, guiding you through various techniques and styles to incorporate collage into your artwork. Each week focuses on different aspects of collage, providing hands-on experience and inspiring new ways to express your artistic vision.

Art - Using colour effectively in landscapes

Learners will explore how best to create depth and atmosphere in a scene using tone and colour and how to get a range of convincing and rich colour into a picture

Art for all

This course aims to improve your drawing, painting and observation skills in a relaxed atmosphere with as much one to one tuition as possible. Whilst learning basics, students are encouraged to express themselves as individuals.

Art in historical practice and context

This course looks at techniques used by artists through the past and aims to bring them to the classroom, e.g. egg tempera painting was used before oil paint. There were also subtle techniques with the different old master artists such as underpainting and use of glazes.

Art -Oil painting & using monochrome underpainting

This is a short course, taking place over three consecutive weeks and will cover several aspects of this painting technique. It will demonstrate an old oil painting method using an under picture called a grisaille which is used to build up colours on top of a solid monochromatic underpainting. Learners will be shown how to develop a strong initial picture, just using black and white, and over the following two weeks build up the picture, using layers of oil paint called glazes.

Emergency First Aid at Work

Suitable for those already working or for those preparing to work. It is also suitable for those who have responsibility to provide basic first aid in voluntary and community activities. This course aims to enable the learner to understand the role and responsibilities of a first aider, also to assess and administer initial first aid in an emergency situation. A Level 3 Award is available on successful completion of this course. Learners are required to be 16 or over.

Guitar beginners - continuation

For those that have completed the beginners course, this course will build on the skills already acquired.

History of Art

Learn about the origins of art, the emergence of art from other cultures and various styles and artists throughout the centuries.

This advanced Italian conversation class is designed to refine fluency and elevate your speaking skills through discussions on complex topics. Ideal for learners with a strong foundation in Italian, the course aims to enhance your confidence and spontaneity in conversation.

Using your tablet - introduction

This course will look at how to get started with the tablet, how to download and use apps, books, games, browse the web, check and write emails. This course covers how to protect privacy and other security features.

Yoga Light

A gentle class in which you explore all the aspects of traditional yoga, from movement and posture (asana) to breathing and relaxation. Beginners are welcome as well as people who consider themselves 'out of practice'. The aim is to encourage mobility and to teach stress relief and mental relaxation techniques - so, a calmer, healthier and more relaxed you.
