Traditional upholstery is a craft where an item of period furniture is upholstered using hand tools, traditional methods and organic materials. It is the fine detail that represents the craft and enables the craft to be kept alive. The course is open to everyone from complete beginners to those with experience who wish to hone and develop their skills. Please be aware that we do not have a fully equipped workshop, but one of the wonderful aspects about traditional upholstery is that it can be practiced with just a few very basic hand tools. This course aims to enable students to bring along a chair of their choice to work upon, whilst learning a range of traditional skills. However, we will be in a classroom environment with space for 10 students and so bench space is limited. Therefore, smaller items such as dining chairs, occasional chairs and stools are all suitable projects (examples below). It is very important that you tackle one or two smaller projects which contain basic techniques before you go on to more complex ones. Large pieces, such as armchairs, sofas and chaise longue are not suitable projects to bring to class. They are too big, heavy and awkward to move and are not safe in a classroom when benches and students have limited space. Comfortable working conditions will contribute to your ease of working and ultimately to successful results.Ukulele
