Childcare Providers Grant

Welsh Government announced on the 12th July the launch of the Childcare Providers Grant.

This is part of Welsh Government comprehensive package of support for businesses across Wales affected by coronavirus, the Childcare Providers Grant will provide dedicated support for the childcare sector in Wales.

Since March many of the childcare providers have faced significant challenges as a consequence of the coronavirus.  To control the spread of the virus it was necessary to keep the numbers of children in attendance low.  We recognise that this came at a cost.

The Childcare Provider Grant will provide a much-needed financial lifeline to childcare providers who have not been able to access other government support packages, and help ensure that formal childcare places are available to parents as schools re-open in September.  This is an important part of ensuring there is sufficient capacity in the sector which is key to supporting working families.

Who is eligible

The scheme is available to those registered childcare settings which have been unable to access the other business support schemes offered by the UK and Welsh Governments and most providers will be eligible for a grant of £2,500.

The scheme will be a one-off grant to help providers meet the additional financial burdens they have faced since March, with many settings experiencing a reduction in income whilst continuing to meet costs such as rent, utilities and unmet wage costs.

Subject to the criteria below, a business may be eligible for a grant up to £5,000:

  • Where the reduction in net income is 50% or less, the grant will equal the reduction in net income, or £2,500, whichever is lower;
  • Where the reduction in net income is 51% or greater, the grant will equal the reduction in net income or £5,000, whichever is lower;
  • Where the business started trading on or after 1 July 2020, the business will be eligible for a grant equivalent to the net loss suffered for the period 1 April 2020 to 30 June 2020, or £2,500, whichever is lower.

Businesses can apply for the grant by using the eligibility checker on the Business Wales website. If eligible, you will be invited to apply. You must include your supporting evidence with your application. Applications without supporting evidence will not be considered.

Scanned documents and photos are acceptable forms of evidence for this purpose.

The Childcare Provider Grant is open to applications from the 24th August 2020 until the fund is fully committed or 31st October 2020, whichever is earlier. Applications will be dealt with on a first come first served basis. This may lead to applications not being appraised after they have been submitted if the fund is fully committed. The Welsh Government has absolute discretion on the duration and terms of the fund.

Guidance Notes

Applications for the scheme will open on 24 August and the scheme will close on 31 October 2020.
