Seagull-proof bags rolled out county-wide

Pictured are Cllr Huw George and Tracy Wornham with some of the seagull-proof bags, which will be available to buy at several locations in the County from April.

Seagull-proof refuse bags will be available to buy all over  Pembrokeshire from April, following successful trials in Tenby.

The trials, carried out by Pembrokeshire County Council and Tenby Town Council, aimed to find out whether the bags would reduce street rubbish by deterring gulls and animals from attacking kerbside waste.

They proved overwhelmingly successful, and now the bags are to made available to purchase for householders throughout the County.

They will £5.30 each.

Cllr Huw George said he was delighted that the scheme is being extended.

"It's proved to be a very effective way of dealing with street rubbish," he said.

"The bags not only deter seagulls from ripping open black bags, but also animals such as foxes and badgers. They are tough, durable, cheaper than wheelie bins and can be folded away when not in use."

The bags can hold two to three black bags inside, and have a weighted base to stop them blowing away once emptied.

There is a Velcro lid to stop birds and animals from gaining access, and handles to help carry the bag to the kerbside.

Some of the comments from Tenby residents who took part in the trial included:

"Completely deterred seagulls. I'm over the moon after years of moaning - eg "if we can land on the moon, why can't someone invent a seagull proof bag?" Well done to whoever has achieved it!"

"I believe that this is the best anti-gull prevention ever.  It works and prevents litter and waste on the streets.  Businesses should also be encouraged to take part."

Tracy Wornham, Commercial Waste Officer, said there had been lots of interest in rolling out the scheme.

"We're very pleased to be able to make these bags available to purchase from several locations throughout the county from April," she said.

  • From Monday (20th March) the bags will be available to buy from Pembrokeshire County Council's depot at Thornton (01437 775900).
