Electoral and Open Register
The electoral register lists the names of everyone who is entitled to vote. Certain people or organisations can legally have copies of the electoral register but can only use it for specific purposes.
The main use of the electoral register is for elections and referendums. It can also be used for the purpose of the prevention and detection of crime, the enforcement of the criminal law and the checking of identity when you apply for credit.
Details of who can have copies and the purposes for which they can use the electoral register are given in the Representation of the People (England and Wales) (Amendment) Regulations 2002. It would be a criminal offence not to comply with these Regulations.
The Open Register
The open register leaves out the names and addresses of people who have asked to be excluded from this version of the register. The open register can be purchased by anyone who asks for a copy and they may use it for any purpose.
If you do not wish to have your name and address included on the open register you should indicate this on the annual form which is sent to your property. If applying for inclusion at any other time under rolling registration you will need to indicate this on the form you complete.
