Road closures can be arranged by the Authority to enable special events to take place and are implemented under the powers contained in either the Town Police Clauses Act 1847 or Sec.16A of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984. A special event can include street fairs, carnivals, village fayres and sporting events.
The applicant is responsible for meeting the advertising costs associated with the closure and if the event has a commercial gain then an administration fee is also applicable. Costs associated with temporary closure and alternative route signage will also have to be met by the applicant.
Requests for special event closures need to be put in writing to the Authority approximately 6 weeks in advance in order for an assessment to be made and if feasible the legal order made.
