Pembroke Dock Town Council

About Us

Situated on the edge of the Cleddau estuary, Pembroke Dock (pop 9,100) has a proud military and world famous ship building heritage.

Formerly known as Paterchurch, it was developed surrounding the formation of the Royal Dockyard which was officially established in October, 1815. For well over a century the name of Pembroke Dock was synonymous with the Royal Navy and from 1816 until the closure of the Dockyard in 1922, over 250 ships were built, including five Royal Yachts.

Pembroke Dock was a Garrison Town for 153 years up until 1967 with 150 Regiments stationed in the Town over that period. For nearly 20 years during the Second World War and afterwards the R.A.F. also had a major presence and the famous Sunderland Flying Boats were based here, with Pembroke Dock becoming the largest operational flying boat station in the world.

Today, the unrivalled waterway and the skills of the local population are the key to the future of the town with a wide range of small firms operating in the town. The port of Pembroke Dock continues to expand and increase its trade with Irish Ferries bringing in half a million passengers through the ferry terminal each year on the Pembroke Dock to Rosslare route.
