Neyland is situated on the northern bank of the Cleddau Estuary, in Pembrokeshire, West Wales, between Haverfordwest the County Town 10 miles north, Pembroke and Pembroke Dock, a few miles across the water to the south.
Cardiff, the Capital of Wales is but a two-hour drive away, mainly along a dual carriageway and motorway, with Swansea, another large city, some 50 miles distant.
A small airport is situated at Haverfordwest, and Irish Ferries operates a twice-daily passenger vehicle service from Pembroke Dock to Rosslare in the Irish Republic. Though not on the main route through the County of Pembrokeshrie, Neyland is nevertheless situated within 10 miles of 75% of the population of Pembrokeshire.
Its origins can be traced back precisely to 1856 when a former village of 200 inhabitants, suddenly began to grow with the arrival of the Great Western Railway line, pioneered by that world renowned engineer, Isambard Kingdom Brunel. There were plans to set up a packet ship boat service between Neyland and the New World, as part of Brunel's vision, but unfortunately the Admiralty, had other ideas, with the result that Southampton, in England was chosen as an alternative.
The population of the town has grown and fluctuated with the passage of time to arrive at the present population of approximately 4200 inhabitants. The town has grown from the river, up a relatively steep hill, levelling off to land providing stunning views of the River Cleddau. Farmers generally have the benefit of good quality land producing a tremendous range of produce from early Pembrokeshire new potatoes, through beef and dairy cattle and sheep, to fine strawberries, all benefiting from the warming influence of the mild Atlantic breezes. The fishing industry is now returning to the town, with several small companies in operation. Until the late 1970s a ferry used to bring people and vehicles across the River Cleddau, but this has now been replaced by the Cleddau Toll Bridge, which although making the crossing faster, has resulted in the town being slightly by-passed by the A477 Main Road.
A Wildlife Reserve, together with a 360-berth marina now benefits from land vacated by the railway, which closed in the 1960s, the Brunel Cycle Track passes through the Town, making up part of the 220-mile Celtic Trail from Chepstow to St David's. This trail is part of the much larger 5000 mile Euro Trail. Sporting Organisations are well represented with Sailing, Soccer, Cricket, Rugby and Judo to the fore. Artistically the Town has a great deal to offer with the Neyland Ladies Choir, together with a number of artists, craftspeople and writers, being much in evidence. At the entrance to the Town is the quietly efficient Honeyborough Business Park, with the Brunel Quay area also being fully utilised by a number of business units.
