About Us

Milford Haven, celebrated its Bi-centenary in 1990, having been built when pioneering American Quakers were persuaded to settle here and provide whale oil to light the streets of London. Milford became a thriving and important fishing port, the trawler fleet peaked at 130 vessels in the 1920s, when some 1000 local people were employed by the fish trade.

The gradual demise of the fishing in post war years coincided with the development of Milford Haven as one of the world’s major oil ports. Four huge refineries with their great jetties lined its shores in the 60s and 70s.

Changes in the economic climate and consumer demands have resulted in only two refineries currently remaining in full operation and the Home Fishing Fleet has been replaced by European fishing vessels off loading catches for transportation by road to the continent.

Tourism and leisure have now come to the fore. The dockside is now being developed to accommodate marina related businesses, leisure facilities and housing. Recent such developments combined with the superb natural heritage along the haven waterway, will ensure that Milford Haven will always be a pleasant place to work in and to visit.
