Fishguard Information Centre is back at its usual home, the Town Hall in Market Square.
Fishguard is famous for the French invasion in 1797, troops landed at Caregwastad, miles from the town. The locals, abandoned by the gentry, turned out with pitchforks to round up the Frenchmen. It is said that local women, dressed in their traditional costume of tall black hats, red shawls and white aprons, were mistaken by the French for regular troops. This mistake persuaded the French to surrender to the small force of Fishguard Fencibles - as the pitchfork-wielding local militia was called. The surrender treaty was signed at the Royal Oak pub opposite the Information Centre.
The remains of the fort can be found in Lower Town, Fishguard and is well worth a visit. This was the setting for the filming of Dylan Thomas' 'Under Milkwood' starring Richard Burton and some of the scenes from the film 'Moby Dick'.
